Microdermabrasion is a procedure done by a professional to exfoliate the top layers of the skin. There are two basic types of microderm facials, Crystal Microdermabrasion and Diamond Microdermabrasion. Both offer similar benefits but their processes differ slightly.
Crystal Microderm is the traditional form of these exfoliation treatments. Crystal Microdermabrasion uses a crystal-emitting handpiece to blow a fine stream of crystals against the skin. The crystals loosen the dead and dry skin cells so they can easily be extracted. The esthetician then uses a vacuum like device to remove the dead skin and reveals fresh glowing, healthy skin underneath.
Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion, like its predecessor Crystal Microderm, is a minimally invasive treatment that exfoliates the skin. Diamond Tip uses a diamond tipped wand to remove the top layers of the skin to reveal fresh glowing, healthy skin underneath. The wands vacuum sucks up the dirt and dead skin cells. This microdermabrasion technique does not use exfoliating particles.
Crystal Microderm is the more traditional version of this exfoliation treatment and is quickly being surpassed by Diamond Tip Microderm. Diamond Microdermabrasion does not leave behind residue unlike the Crystal method. Crystal Microdermabrasion leaves particles on the surface of the skin from the crystals that are emitted from the wand. Positive results of the Diamond Tip Microderm rely on the technique and skill of the esthetician. Both procedures are low risk and have rapid recovery times. They are both painless and do not require the use of needles or anesthesia.
Crystal and Diamond Microdermabrasion both have very little recovery time which make them both excellent treatments to see immediate results. Less than a day is typical for recovery time. A flushed appearance is not uncommon and will fade quickly following the treatment.
The best thing about both treatments is that the results are noticeably visible directly after the treatment.
Post care treatment according to wikiHow
Traditionally Crystal Microdermabrasion has been used to exfoliate the skin to reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin related conditions. The exfoliating treatment of microdermabrasion has been moving more towards the diamond technique. Diamond Tip does not leave residue on the skin, relies on the skill of the technician and allows the esthetician to have more control over the results. The process of the diamond tip is gentler on sensitive skin.
If you are an esthetician and Crystal Microdermabrasion is on your service menu it may be a good business decision to also start providing the Diamond tip Microdermabrasion procedure.
